“Maybe in Our Next Life”
There’s a connection between this song and an earlier CIEVA song, “What If We Didn’t Meet.”
That song asked a frightening question: what would my life have looked like if our paths had never crossed?
“Maybe in Our Next Life” looks at the same relationship from the opposite direction.
Instead of wondering what might have happened if we never met, I started wondering:
What if we'd met sooner?
What if I'd known you when I was twenty? Would we have had more years together? Would we have built a family? Would we have shared all those ordinary moments that eventually become a lifetime?
But there's a complication.
Maybe we weren't ready for each other then.
Maybe we needed the lives we lived, the mistakes we made and the things we learned to become the people who eventually found each other. Twenty years earlier, perhaps our paths could have crossed and we would have simply kept walking.
That's what changed the song for me.
It stopped being about regretting the years we didn't have and became about being thankful for the years we do have.
“What If We Didn’t Meet” wondered what would have happened if I never found you.
“Maybe in Our Next Life” simply wishes I had found you sooner.
And if there is another life?
